Project Description

The Cell Zero

Sinossi

The ‘Cell Zero’ is an empty room with a window always closed and the walls clear.

It ‘s the place where, according to the story of who we were, the inmates were brought, in the jail of Naples, to be beaten by some prison officers. In some cases, perhaps, even to death. For the first time former inmates decide to publicly tell their personal experience of violence in prison. For them, talking is dangerous because of their social problems, many of them know that they will return to prison and talk to the ‘Cell Zero’ may cost them their lives. Federico Perna died in prison in Naples on November 8, 2013. He died of ischemic, according to the autopsy. But his mother, Nobila, not resigned. On the body of thirty-four were in fact evident signs of beatings. The Poggioreale prison in Naples has a capacity of 1630 inmates. The time has come to hold up to 3000.

The famous cell zero was born in 1981, in 2013 after complaints of detainees the Department of Penitentiary launch an internal investigation. A few months later the director of the prison Teresa Abate is transferred. Some prison officers are removed from the wards. To date there are no other reports of violence suffered by detainees.

The judiciary is investigating past cases.
